The Birds, Acrylic and India Ink on Canvas, 20”x18”

How does the artwork relate to the theme of the show?
I really like “The Birds” because during the pandemic, these little birds were nesting outside my kitchen window and because there wasn’t any traffic last spring, I could sit and listen to their songs in the morning. In the picture, they have no faces because I could never find them when I went outside and they would fly away if I got to close. I guess that I picked this painting to match my other painting in the show.
What was the first artwork you created that really mattered to you?
I painted a 6×6 inch picture called the golf course. I liked this painting so much that I couldn’t bear to sell it in the 50/50 show last year. I just recently gave it to my student for a graduation gift. He has it hanging in his dining room.
What is a little known fact about yourself that you would like to share?
I recently discovered that art and science are very similar in intellectual discovery and creativity. In college, I majored in chemistry, and studied theoretical quantum chemistry. I spent the first two years working on the physical properties of highly strained three atom molecules or triangles. Last year, I spent the whole summer painting triangles in my project on Geometric Abstraction. I imagine going forward in my life that art has won and there is no turning back. I’m excited to be a part of the Sanchez Artist Community.

Waves Redux, Acrylic on Canvas, 20”x10”

How does your artwork relate to the theme of the show?

I had been painting and drawing wave patterns and then I realized that the opposite directions of the waves represented a returning effect.

What is the most important artist tool that you use in your practice?

I think of design as a foremost tool in creating a composition. In the creative phase of an artwork, design helps incorporate perspective, proportion, balance, form and color for an aesthetic theme. To me design is the blueprint of an artwork as it helps guide the compositional flow and organizes form.

Do you have any upcoming projects that you would like to share?

I got the urge to do sculpture, so I’m experimenting with metal, wire and plastics. Also, I’m using glass to make small mural panels.
